I have an hp laser-jet 8720

recently went to change the color and black inks and started to receive the following message.

cartridge problem

remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge (k) making sure it is correctly installed

if the message continues to appear, replace the indicated cartridge.

Ive tried brand new up to date generic cartridges and original hp ink and still get the message.

Ive done all the trouble shooting possible and available.

can anyone help as I have yet to run across anyone with this error message on any inkjet printer.

Thanks in advance

Hi @eda8720,

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP printer is showing a cartridge error asking you to remove and reinstall the black (K) cartridge, and the message continues even with new genuine and generic cartridges. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power reset the printer
With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall.
Wait at least 60 seconds, then plug it directly into a wall outlet and turn it back on.

Remove and inspect all cartridges
Remove all cartridges, not just the black one.
Check for ink buildup, bent contacts, or damage on the cartridge chips.

Clean cartridge and carriage contacts
Turn the printer off and unplug it.
Using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water, gently clean the gold/copper contacts on the cartridges and inside the carriage, then allow them to dry completely.

Reinstall cartridges one at a time
Reinsert the cartridges starting with color, then black last.
Make sure each cartridge clicks firmly into place before closing the access door.

Check for protective tape or chip obstruction
Even on replacement cartridges, confirm no protective film remains on the chip or ink outlet.
Any obstruction can prevent the printer from recognizing the cartridge.

Verify cartridge compatibility
Confirm the cartridges are specifically designed for your exact printer model and region.
Incompatible firmware or regional chips can trigger a cartridge error even if the cartridge is new.

Update or reset printer firmware (if accessible)
If the printer menu allows it, check the firmware version.
A firmware mismatch or corruption can cause false cartridge detection errors.

Test with only the black cartridge installed
Remove all color cartridges and install only the black cartridge.
Power on the printer and check whether the same error appears.

Inspect the cartridge carriage
Look inside the printer for ink leaks, debris, or damage in the black cartridge slot.
If the carriage contacts are damaged or contaminated, cartridges will not be recognized.

I hope this helps.
