HP Officejet 5212 All in One.  I recently installed new cartridges and when I try to print the copy comes out very light, unreadable.  I get a message on the screen that "printer cartridges are set to default". I did run the alignment and head cleaner tools.  I also tried to reset the default settings by going into the control panel>printer>properties.  Still not working right.

Hi @susanv99,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel how frustrating this must be. You’ve done everything right: installed genuine cartridges, run alignment and cleaning, even tried resetting defaults, yet the prints are still faint and unreadable. Let’s bring your HP OfficeJet Pro 5212 back to life so you can hear that reassuring hum and see crisp, bold text on the page again.

Recommended Steps

1. Verify Cartridges

  • Make sure all cartridges are genuine HP and properly seated.
  • Remove each cartridge, check for protective tape on the ink nozzles, and reinstall firmly until you feel that satisfying click.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power on. This clears temporary memory and resets recognition.

3. Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to Official HP® Support and enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.
  • Firmware updates often fix cartridge recognition and print quality issues.

4. Deep Clean Printhead

  • On the printer control panel:
    • Tap Setup → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
    • If the first cleaning doesn’t help, run Level 2 cleaning.
  • Print a test page after each cleaning.

5. Check Paper & Print Settings

  • In your print dialog, ensure Paper Type matches what you’re using.
  • Set Print Quality to Best for testing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
