Hi @FloydF ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're encountering a frustrating situation. The error message you're receiving suggests that the printer doesn't recognize the ink cartridges you've inserted, even though they are intended for your HP Envy 7640 series printer.
Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
- Ensure Compatibility: Double-check that the ink cartridges you bought are indeed compatible with your HP Envy 7640 printer. Sometimes, even if they're from the same series, there could be variations that cause compatibility issues.
- Reinstall Cartridges: Try removing the cartridges and reseating them in the printer. Sometimes, a poor connection can cause the printer not to recognize the cartridges properly.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: If the contacts on the ink cartridges or inside the printer are dirty or covered in ink residue, it can prevent proper communication. Gently clean the contacts with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the printer and resolve minor issues.
- Firmware Update: Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, updates can include bug fixes that address issues with ink recognition. Update the firmware on an HP printer

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
