Hi @Mammyandhaas,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Smart Tank 5101 printer is not providing you with the option to print in color, there are several potential reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot:

  • Check Ink Levels: Ensure that your color ink cartridges are installed properly and have sufficient ink levels. If the color ink cartridges are low or empty, the printer may default to printing in black or grayscale.
  • Printer Settings: Check the printer settings on your computer or device. Sometimes, the default printer settings may be set to print in grayscale or black and white. Access the printer properties or settings through the print dialog box and make sure that color printing is enabled.
  • Printer Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer or device. Outdated drivers may cause printing issues, including the inability to print in color. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest drivers for your printer model.
  • Printer Preferences: Within the printer settings or preferences, look for options related to color printing. There may be settings that allow you to specify color printing preferences, such as printing in color by default or printing in grayscale.
  • Print Quality Settings: Some printers have different print quality settings that may affect color printing options. Check the print quality settings to ensure that they are configured appropriately for color printing.
  • Printer Firmware Update: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Firmware updates can address bugs and improve printer functionality, including color printing options.
  • Hardware Issues: If none of the above solutions resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
