I have an HP Officejet pro 8610. Over 90% of my print needs are black but I am continually replacing the colors. I think they just dry up. this has become incredibly expensive as you can imagine.  When I go to print (black) I am blocked by the message to replace a color and can not get passed it. Is there a way to reset print parameters for black only or at least a way to get past this. Obviously I am a novice who inherited a printer way beyond my basic needs. can anybody help me.  -- A frustrated 76 year old curmudgeon.

Hi @rhall006

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels to need mostly black printing and yet be blocked by color cartridge messages. You’ve already noticed how quickly costs add up, so let’s go through practical steps to keep your Officejet Pro 8610 working for your needs.

1. Why the printer asks for color cartridges

  • The Officejet Pro 8610 uses all cartridges to maintain printhead health, even if you mostly print in black.
  • If a color cartridge is empty or missing, the printer may stop printing to prevent damage to the printhead.
  • This is why you see the “replace color” message even when you only want black.

2. Print in black only mode

  • On your Windows 11 PC, open the document you want to print.
  • Select File > Print > Printer Properties.
  • Under the Color or Advanced tab, choose Print in Grayscale or Black Ink Only.
  • This ensures the printer uses only the black cartridge for the job.
  • Note: the printer still requires color cartridges to be installed, but they won’t be used for the print itself.

3. Keep cartridges from drying out

  • Print a small color test page once every couple of weeks. This keeps ink flowing and prevents the cartridges from drying.
  • Store spare cartridges sealed until needed. Exposure to air accelerates drying.

4. Update firmware and drivers

  • Go to the HP Officejet Pro 8610 Drivers page.
  • Install the latest firmware and driver package.
  • Updated software ensures the printer recognizes black‑only settings correctly.

5. Use the HP App for easier control

  • Download the HP App from the HP App Overview page.
  • Add your printer in the app.
  • From there, you can select Print Settings > Grayscale to simplify black‑only printing.

You cannot bypass the need for color cartridges entirely, but by setting grayscale/black‑only mode and keeping cartridges from drying out, you’ll reduce waste and expense while still meeting your mostly‑black printing needs.

Would you like me to walk you step‑by‑step through enabling Grayscale/Black Ink Only in Windows print settings? That’s the quickest way to make sure your printer uses only black for everyday jobs.
