When printing very large PDF documents the printer will not print. I have to keep trying to print and eventually it will start printing but then in most cases it will stop short of printing all the pages. I had a 201-page document to print, and it took me 10 try's and 1.5 hours. I purchased this printer to make my job easier, but it hasn't yet. what am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the HP Community --

You might not be doing anything wrong.

"This printer" might be capable of such a large job -- or it might not.

Large Enterprise class LaserJet Office Printers -- connected to high-speed Ethernet -- printing moderately dense (page filled) documents -- might cope with large jobs better than consumer grade printers.

What else?

Suggestions...

Standard home networks tend to be busy -- should you be forced to use a Wireless connection, for example, the capacity of that network to handle multiple connections might be up-to-task or perhaps not.  Shut down all other devices, close other programs / software that require resources on your device and network to reduce the strain on the Wireless connection.

The printer's own memory capacity impacts how much data it can handle at one time.  Smaller consumer grade printers are  meant for moderate printing needs -- in general, a 201 page PDF document does not necessarily fall into the "moderate printing needs" category.  Check your printer's specifications for how much on board resources are available.

Check your router - Outdated, weak, poorly configured, or poorly placed routers significantly impact the network and your experiences with your devices.

The easier option when faced with limitations on network, printer, or resources, is to split the job into smaller parts --

For example,

Use "Page Range" to print X number of pages in each job -

  • If printing Duplex, enter the number of front/back page sets accordingly.
  • Respect and, as possible, control your network resources.
  • If using a small consumer grade printer with smaller memory, print fewer pages at a time (5-10 ?)
  • When the first job completes, submit the second "chunk" of Pages as a separate job.
  • Repeat the process until the PDF file has printed.

Page Range is available in several applications and print software.

General Example - HP Smart Windows - Simple PDF Print

Find "Page Range" on the main print menu

General Example - Adobe Reader - PDF File - Print

Look for "Page Range" / in Pages to Print > Select Pages > Enter Page Range
