my printer stopped printing magenta. It is now 6 years old and I subscribe to instant ink. I tried cleaning print heads, soaking cartridges, restarting , un plugging. Was told the printer is not supported for updates anymore which may have solved it. New cartridges are on the way, but I kept playing with it and just inserted the incorrect color in each slot. Got a message saying that I had the cartridges in the wrong spot so I changed them all. Then, the printer was forced to do a longer maintenance fix. It woke up and is now printing all colors beautifully. I hope it stays working. HP tried to sell me a printer on a subscription plan, that would force me to turn the printer in at the end of 2-3 years. Generally I love this printer and the instant ink program.

Not supporting the software forces the owner to get a new printer every 3-5 years. Please offer a software update for the older models!  My 8025 all in one printer is great!

Hi @JudyBelle505,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your printer is not printing magenta correctly, and you’re concerned about color printing reliability on your HP OfficeJet 8025. Let’s go through a few steps to help stabilize the color output and keep it working properly.

Perform a print quality diagnostic
Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page from the printer control panel.
This confirms whether all color channels, especially magenta, are consistently firing.

Run printhead cleaning once more (only once or twice)
Use the printer’s built-in cleaning utility from the control panel or HP software.
Avoid repeated cleanings, as excessive cycles can cause ink starvation or wear.

Reseat all cartridges correctly
Remove all cartridges and reinsert them firmly into their correct color slots.
Ensure each cartridge clicks into place and the access door closes fully.

Confirm cartridges are genuine and active
Make sure the cartridges are HP Instant Ink cartridges and show as “Ready.”
If a cartridge shows low or unknown status, replace it when the new set arrives.

Power reset the printer
With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Wait 60 seconds, plug it directly into a wall outlet, and turn the printer back on.

Check printer firmware version
From the printer menu, review the current firmware version.
Even if updates are no longer available, confirming firmware stability helps rule out corruption.

Avoid cartridge swapping between slots again
The extended maintenance cycle you experienced likely flushed blocked ink channels.
Repeating incorrect cartridge placement can damage ink delivery components.

Monitor color consistency over the next few prints
Print a color document or photo every few days to keep ink flowing.
Long periods without color printing can lead to clogs, especially on older units.

I hope this helps.

Hi @JudyBelle505,

Thank you for sharing how you feel, I completely understand why this situation is frustrating, and your feedback is valid. When a printer has been working well for years, it’s upsetting to run into reliability issues and feel pressured into replacement, especially when you’ve been loyal to the Instant Ink program.

To clarify a few important points in a straightforward way:

Printers are not intentionally designed to fail at a specific age, but over time components like printheads do wear, especially after years of regular use.

On many HP inkjet models, the printhead is built into the printer rather than the cartridge, so once it begins to fail, cleaning routines may only help temporarily.

Instant Ink cartridges are subscription-based by design and stop working if the subscription is canceled. This is a known limitation of the program, not a fault with your printer.

Firmware and software support eventually ends for older models, which means fewer fixes are possible even if the hardware is still mostly functional.

That said, it’s genuinely good news that your printer is currently printing all colors again. The extended maintenance cycle you triggered likely cleared a partial internal blockage, which can happen on older units. To help keep it going as long as possible:

Print a color page at least once every week to keep ink flowing.

Avoid repeated deep clean cycles unless print quality clearly degrades.

Keep the printer powered on (or in sleep mode) so it can perform automatic maintenance.

Your comments about long-term support, sustainability, and customer choice are important, and feedback like this is taken seriously when shared in the community.

If the issue returns or you want help maximizing the lifespan of your current printer, feel free to reach out anytime—we’re here to help you get the most out of it.
