@1vegego1-_, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP OfficeJet Pro 9012 printer will not print if any of the cartridges (including color ones) are empty, even if you're only trying to print in black. This is by design and is common with most HP inkjet printers.

Here's why:

HP uses a system called "composite black" or color mixing to improve print quality, even on black-and-white pages. So it often uses small amounts of color ink even when printing grayscale.

Additionally, the printer is designed to:

  • Prevent printhead damage (which relies on all inks to function properly).
  • Avoid poor-quality prints that may result from missing color inks.

Your Options:

Replace the Empty Color Cartridges

Even if you don't use color, the printer needs all cartridges to have at least some ink
You can:

Install new color cartridges.

Unfortunately, the OfficeJet Pro 9012 does not support single-cartridge mode

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
