HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,  I have changed a depleted ink cartridge and I'm receiving the following message.

" There is a problem with the printer or ink system. turn the printer off then on if you continue to get this message contact HP support"

What I have tried is to turn the printer off unplug from power wait a while plug it back in and power on tried this several times but keep getting same message, I then tried another new ink cartridge and received the same message so I placed the old depleted ink cartridge back in and the printer went through it's process of preparing printer at the of that process I received the depleted ink cartridge replace before printing can resume.

So I placed one of the new cartridge's back in the printer and received the same message as earlier, so I took that new cartridge out and replaced it with the other new cartridge and again received the same message, not sure if it would be a problem with two new ink cartridges , but find it strange that I do not get that message when I place the old depleted ink cartridge back in the printer.

Any help with this problem would be most appreciated, Thank You.

Hi @PYROT1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One printer is experiencing an issue with the ink system, which can sometimes be caused by several factors such as a miscommunication between the printer and the new ink cartridges or a problem with the printer's internal system.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.

Check the Ink Cartridge Contacts

  • Ensure the new cartridges are properly installed and the contacts (both on the cartridge and inside the printer) are clean.
  • Use a clean, dry cloth to gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on both the ink cartridge and the printer’s cartridge bay.

Reset the Printer

  • Perform a hard reset of the printer:
    1. Turn the printer off.
    2. Unplug the printer from the power outlet.
    3. Wait for about 60 seconds.
    4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Re-seat the Ink Cartridges

  • Open the printer’s ink cartridge compartment and remove both the ink cartridges.
  • Wait a moment, then carefully re-insert the new cartridges. Make sure they click securely into place.
  • Close the compartment and try printing again.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, printer firmware can affect how it interacts with ink cartridges. If you have access to the printer’s settings via a computer, check for any available firmware updates.

Try a Printer Reset

  • If the above steps don't resolve the issue, you might need to perform a reset of the printer's internal settings. Here's how:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Hold down the # and 9 keys at the same time while turning the printer on.
    3. Keep holding the buttons until the printer displays a reset screen.

Check for Ink Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure the new cartridges are the correct model for your printer. Sometimes, third-party or refilled cartridges can cause compatibility issues, even if they physically fit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Alden4, Thank you for your reply,

You may be correct regarding the contacts , I think it may be the contacts within the printhead , I have ordered a new printhead holder contactor sensor , the thing I find strange is the printer does not recognize the 2 new cartridges , the printer does recognize the old depleted cartridge when I insert it back into the printer,  I have returned and received a refund for one of the ink cartridges and the other one was swapped for a new one , I do not want to use this new cartridge until the new printhead holder arrives.

You said that I may have to perform a reset of the printer's internal settings. Here's how: Turn off the printer. Hold down the # and 9 keys , The issue with this procedure is that my printer does not have a number key pad anywhere on the printer or on the display panel , so how would a reset be done on this printer.

You also mentioned that I may need to update the firmware , I have tried that I the past for other issues but that does not work either also unable to reconnect to HP’s EWS after disconnecting
