Hi @Kat00700,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is printing blank pages despite having black ink, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.
Check Ink Cartridges: Ensure the black ink cartridge is properly installed and has ink. Sometimes, the cartridge might appear full but be empty or defective. Remove and reinsert the cartridge to make sure it's seated correctly.
Print Head Cleaning: Use the printer's built-in cleaning function. You can usually find this option in the printer's control panel or software on your computer. This will clean the print heads and may resolve the issue.
- On the printer control panel: Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
- Via the HP Smart app: Open the app, select your printer, go to Printer Maintenance or Tools, and choose Clean Printhead.
Align Printheads: Misalignment can also cause blank pages. Aligning the printheads may help.
- On the printer control panel: Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Align Printhead.
- Via the HP Smart app: Open the app, select your printer, go to Printer Maintenance or Tools, and choose Align Printhead.
Check for Software or Driver Issues: Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed. You can download them from the HP Support website.
Inspect the Nozzles: Sometimes, the print head nozzles can get clogged. If cleaning via the printer's tools doesn’t help, you may need to perform a manual cleaning. Follow HP's instructions for this process carefully to avoid damaging the printer.
Perform a Hard Reset: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
Check Printer Settings: Make sure you haven’t accidentally set the printer to print in color only or have any other incorrect settings. Check the print settings on your computer or device.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
