Hi @joesnova,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to get your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer out of single-cartridge mode, follow these steps:

What is Single Cartridge Mode?

Single cartridge mode occurs when only one cartridge (either black or color) is installed in the printer. To exit this mode, both cartridges must be installed and functioning properly.

Steps to Exit Single Cartridge Mode

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Open the printer's cartridge access door.
  • Make sure both the black and color cartridges are installed in their respective slots.
  • If one is missing, insert a compatible cartridge.

Verify Cartridge Status:

  • From the printer's control panel, go to Settings > Tools > Cartridge Information to check the status of the cartridges.
  • If a cartridge is low, damaged, or improperly recognized, replace it with a new, compatible HP cartridge.

Perform a Printer Reset:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer back on.

Disable Single Cartridge Mode in Printer Settings:

  • Ensure both cartridges are installed.
  • Print a test page to confirm normal printing behavior.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Open the HP Smart app or go to the HP Support website to download and install the latest firmware updates for your printer.
  • This can resolve software-related glitches causing single cartridge mode.

Print a Test Page:

  • From the control panel, go to Settings > Tools > Print Quality Report to confirm the printer is no longer in single cartridge mode.
  • If both cartridges are installed and functional, and the printer is still stuck in single cartridge mode, consider cleaning the cartridge contacts:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    2. Remove the cartridges and gently clean their electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
    3. Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
