Hi @wee-becks,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're encountering an issue where the printer is showing the black ink as empty, even though you've just replaced it.
Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Check the Cartridge Installation
- Ensure that the new black ink cartridge is seated properly in its slot. Sometimes if it’s not fully clicked in place, the printer may not register it correctly.
2. Check the Ink Levels
- In the HP Smart app or your printer’s control panel, check the ink levels to confirm that the black cartridge is recognized and showing the correct ink level. If the level still shows as empty or low, it could be a communication issue.
3. Perform a Printhead Cleaning
- Sometimes the printhead can be clogged, even with a new cartridge. To clean the printhead:
- From the Printer: Go to the printer’s menu and look for a "Clean Printhead" option.
- From the HP Smart App: Open the HP Smart app, select your printer, go to the "Printer Tools" or "Manage" section, and choose "Clean Printhead."
- This will help clear any blockages that could be causing the issue.
4. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the wall, wait for 60 seconds, and then plug it back in. This can sometimes resolve minor errors or miscommunications between the printer and the cartridge.
5. Remove and Reinstall the Cartridge
- Remove the cartridge, gently wipe the gold contacts on the cartridge with a soft, lint-free cloth, and then reinsert it back into the printer.
6. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Sometimes a firmware update can resolve issues like this. Go to your printer's settings and check if any updates are available.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
