Thank you Valsimot, I didn't know that. It is not my printer, I am trying to help my niece with it. I have Canon printers which are a totally different set up. I assumed that the printheads were something to do with the white oblong 'cups' that the cartridges fit onto. Do you know whether these 'cups' and associated bits can get clogged?

Yes if the printer is unused for a long period ink dries in the printhead ( cartridge) and you get a bad print or even no print at all.
Soaking a bottom part in hot water might dissolve dried ink, in the worst case new ink cartridges will solve print quality issue.

Thank you Valsimot, that's exactly what happened. I once fitted a Cis system to my Canon but I got rid of it because it gave problems including clogged printheads which couldn't be cleaned with the software so I used the hot water which always worked. Because these hp printheads are totally different I wasn't sure about it but I'll give it a go and let you know how it went.
