my HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M278-M281 was printing in color and now only prints in greyscale. All color cartidges have good levels and diaognostics say there are zero issues. How do I get back to printing in color?

Hi @bsharp316

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M278-M281 suddenly defaults to greyscale despite full color cartridges and clean diagnostics, it’s understandably frustrating. This behavior is often tied to driver settings, application-level print preferences, or firmware-level defaults

Let’s walk through a structured recovery path to restore full-color output.

Step-by-Step Recovery

1. Check Printer Preferences in Windows or macOS

Sometimes the system forces greyscale without warning:

  • Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers
  • Right-click your printer → Select Printing Preferences
  • Under the Color tab, ensure “Print in Grayscale” is unchecked
  • Set Color Mode to Auto or Color

On macOS:

  • Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners
  • Select your printer → Click Options & Supplies → Driver
  • Ensure Color Printing is enabled

2. Check Application-Level Settings

Some apps override system defaults:

  • In Word, Excel, or PDF viewers, go to File → Print
  • Click Printer Properties or Preferences
  • Confirm Color is selected and Greyscale is disabled

3. Update or Reinstall Printer Driver

Outdated or corrupted drivers can default to monochrome:

  • Visit the HP M278-M281 Driver Page
  • Download and install the Full Software Solution
  • Restart your system and test a color print

4. Update Printer Firmware

Firmware updates can resolve persistent color output issues:

  • On the same HP Support Page
  • Select your operating system → Download the latest Firmware Update Utility
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to apply the update

5. Reset Printer Defaults

If settings are stuck:

  • On the printer’s control panel → Tap Setup → Service → Restore Defaults
  • Confirm and allow the printer to restart

This clears any persistent greyscale preference stored in memory.

You’ve done everything right by checking diagnostics and cartridge levels—let’s make sure your printer delivers the vibrant output it’s built for.
