After the firmware update, my 7720 printer no longer recognizes non-original cartridges. I’ve disabled the update options as previously suggested, but it still doesn’t recognize the cartridges. I can’t find the previous firmware version online. Can you help me?"

Hi @Lamecc,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 Wide Format All-in-One Printer suddenly stops recognizing non-original cartridges after a firmware update. You’ve taken smart steps by disabling future updates, but unfortunately, HP firmware updates often include dynamic security features that block third-party cartridges to ensure print quality and protect the printer hardware.

What You Can Do

1. Confirm Firmware Version

Check your current firmware version via the printer’s control panel or Embedded Web Server (EWS). This helps determine if the update included dynamic security enhancements.

2. Try Rolling Back the Firmware

HP does not officially provide older firmware versions for download on the public site. However, you can try the following:

3. Restore Factory Defaults

This won’t remove the firmware update, but it can help reset internal settings that may interfere with cartridge recognition.

4. Use Original HP Cartridges

If rollback isn’t possible, using genuine HP cartridges is the most reliable solution. HP’s dynamic security updates are designed to block non-original cartridges, and unfortunately, this behavior is not reversible once the firmware is updated.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
