After purchasing 3 brand new genuine hp black ink cartridges on 3 separate occasions from 3 different retailers, I'm starting to think the cartridges are not the problem but the printer itself. Unless every HP 61 black ink cartridge in the San Francisco Bay Area is defective. I don't know what else to do, I've downloaded drivers, I've cleaned all contacts both on the cartridges and the carriage multiple times, and I've lost count on how many times I have rebooted the printer itslelf. The printer works fine on colored ink cartridges but not black. I only print in black therefore colored ink cartridges don't last and have to be replaced very quickly. I'm starting to feel like I'm printing from my local FedEx Office Center because they charge $1 for every page you print and that's how fast these colored ink cartridges are being consumed. Help!!!

Hi @tech083,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP printer where it displays an "Incompatible Cartridge" error for black ink cartridges. Given that you've tried multiple genuine cartridges and have performed various troubleshooting steps, here are some additional steps you can take to resolve the problem:
1. Check Cartridge Compatibility
Verify Cartridge Model:
- Ensure that the black ink cartridges you're using are the correct model for your printer. For HP 61 cartridges, confirm that they are compatible with your specific HP printer model.
Check Cartridge Expiry Date:
- Verify that the cartridges are not expired. Although rare, expired cartridges can sometimes cause compatibility issues.
2. Inspect the Printer
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Even though you've cleaned the contacts, do a thorough inspection. Use a lint-free cloth and a small amount of distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
Inspect Cartridge Slot:
- Look inside the cartridge slot for any obstructions or residue that might be interfering with proper contact.
3. Perform Printer Maintenance
Reset Printer:
- Perform a hard reset of the printer. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
Run Printer Diagnostics:
- Some HP printers have built-in diagnostic tools. Check the printer’s menu for any diagnostic or maintenance options.
4. Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Go to the HP Support website and look for firmware updates for your printer model. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.
Reinstall Printer Firmware:
- If a firmware update is available, download and install it according to the instructions provided by HP.
5. Try Different Cartridges
Use HP Genuine Cartridges:
- Since you have already tried multiple genuine HP cartridges, it’s worth confirming that all cartridges are from a reputable source. Counterfeit or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
