I got this "special needs" printer about a month or so ago from a friend which is complaining about "Black Ink Cartridge Failure" while the black ink cartridge is perfectly okay. It functioned normally when I got it, I printed for a good bit until the ink ran out so I got the cartridge refilled and the printer was back in working order again. It's been that way for around 3 weeks now and yesterday when I went to print 60 pages at once, the printer gave me around 40 popups after completing the print about "non genuine ink cartridges" while it has a genuine cartridge inside and after that the orange light for the cartridge started blinking and I got hit with "Ink Cartridge failure" so I took basic troubleshooting steps and cleaned the contacts on the cartridge but still it gave the error once again. I reset the printer and what do you know, the error is gone and the printer is back to working normally. Today, the printer is back with its "error" again and I also noticed it updated the firmware and the cartridge protection feature was turned on without any prompt asking if I want that or not. I can now send 30 pages to the queue and turn the printer on, it prints the 30 pages perfectly and after that shows "Black Ink Cartridge Failure" error which clears for another print once its restarted. I do not understand what this thing is on about, the cartridge is obiously fine so why is it complaining? Is it because I refilled the cartridge with HP inktank ink and the cartridge decided I did not give hp enough money and locked me out of my printer again? Any way to revert this firmware update and let me print again?
If you could not tell already, yes I am mad and on the brink of of throwing this thing out of my window...

Hi @NGXok
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I can totally understand your frustration — it sounds like you're dealing with a combination of issues with your HP printer, including the cartridge protection feature, firmware updates, and potential problems with refilled cartridges.
I would like to inform you that we suggest to use genuine HP ink cartridges,I hate to be the bearer of bad news, however, refill cartridges wouldn't work on the printer as HP only supports genuine HP cartridge.
To update the printer firmware this should help: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Turns out that the whole issue was an imaginary limit on how much I get to use my own cartridge. After some research online I figured out that these DeskJet machines only store 2 records of ink cartridges on the flash chips. I got a cartridge from a friend and my other cartridge, which after being inserted reset the memory and now the old "Failed" cartridge magically showed up as a "New genuine hp ink cartridge" and it magically started printing fine again, no more "Ink cartridge failure" or unwanted popups.

@NGXok We're glad you were able to resolve the issue with your printer! As a friendly tip, we recommend using genuine HP ink cartridges to ensure optimal print quality and to prevent any potential damage to your printer's printhead. Refilled or third-party cartridges can sometimes cause compatibility issues or even damage the printer over time. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask!
