My printer is giving me the error message, "New, unused cartridges must be used for startup".  The cartridges installed are the same ones we have been using for months, they all have ink in them. How do I fix this issue?

I have tried cleaning the contacts on the cartridges, and a power reset (Unplug for 60 seconds) to no avail.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to reset the Printer here:

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.

Also, try a firmware update: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks for replying!

I followed your instructions for a reset, but it did not fix the issue.

As for the updates, the most current updates have already been installed.

@Achristod, I see that the issue still persists.

Make sure you are using HP inks.

Insert one ink cartridge at a time to identify the defective ink cartridge.

Let me know how it goes.

They are all hp ink cartridges and have worked fine for probably the last year or so.

How do I test individual cartridges? Removing any cartridge replaces my original warning with a "Cartridge missing" warning.

Check if the ink cartridges are properly inserted in the printer, you may refer to - Replace HP inkjet printer cartridges

Kindly perform the steps mentioned in this document - Ink cartridge error
