Hi @BOBPAT,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you've replaced the ink cartridges in your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer with genuine HP cartridges, but the printer continues to display an error message indicating that the cartridges need to be replaced with new ones, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Cartridge Installation
- Ensure that each cartridge is correctly installed in its corresponding slot. Make sure they are securely seated and properly snapped into place.
2. Verify Cartridge Integrity
- Check the cartridges themselves for any signs of damage or defects. Ensure that the protective tape or cover has been fully removed from each cartridge.
3. Clean Cartridge Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the cartridges and inspect the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the printer.
- Clean the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
- Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.
4. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Allow the printer to go through its startup routine and check if the error persists.
5. Update Printer Firmware
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware update for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer.
- Follow the instructions provided to install the firmware update on your printer.
6. Perform a Semi-Full Reset
- While the printer is turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the printer.
- Press and hold the "#" and "3" buttons on the printer control panel.
- While holding these buttons, reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Continue to hold the "#" and "3" buttons until the printer turns on completely.
- Release the buttons and follow any on-screen prompts to complete the reset.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Replaced empty ink cartridges with new ones. Within a week of very little usage, they showed empty. Returned to store and exchanged for new package of 4 cartridges ($145) Replaced and within a few days, they are showing empty. I have tried everything suggested by Rachel (other than firmware will not download). Nothing has corrected problem. What's next? Thanks.
