Hi @beckmann

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It can be frustrating when your HP DeskJet 2700 printer runs out of ink quickly, especially if you're not printing much. There are a few reasons this could be happening, and some troubleshooting steps you can take to reduce ink consumption.

It can be frustrating when your HP DeskJet 2700 printer runs out of ink quickly, especially if you're not printing much. There are a few reasons this could be happening, and some troubleshooting steps you can take to reduce ink consumption.

Possible Reasons for High Ink Usage:

Frequent Printhead Cleaning: If your printer performs frequent or automatic cleaning cycles (to prevent ink from drying out), this can consume a significant amount of ink, especially if you haven't been using the printer regularly.

Draft Mode Not Enabled: If you're printing in a high-quality mode by default, the printer will use more ink than necessary for casual or text-heavy printing.

Not Using the Printer Regularly: When printers aren't used regularly, the ink can dry up and cause clogging, which leads to more frequent cleaning cycles that waste ink.

Cartridge Type: Some HP ink cartridges (especially starter cartridges that come with the printer) may contain less ink than standard or XL cartridges, causing them to run out quickly.

Printer Settings: If the printer is set to print in high-quality color mode for all prints, it may use more ink even when printing text-based documents.

Steps to Save Ink and Improve Printer Efficiency:

1. Use Draft Mode for Printing

For regular or text-based printing, use Draft Mode to save ink.

  • On your computer, go to the Print dialog box.
  • Click on Printer Properties or Preferences.
  • In the settings, change the Print Quality to Draft or Economy Mode.
  • This reduces the amount of ink used for regular prints.

2. Enable Ink Conservation Features

Check if your printer offers any ink conservation features that can help reduce ink usage:

  • Open the HP Smart app or Printer Settings.
  • Look for Economy Mode or Ink Conservation settings.
  • Turn these features on to reduce ink usage.

3. Check Printer Cleaning Settings

While some level of cleaning is necessary, too many automatic cleaning cycles can waste ink. If your printer is running a cleaning cycle frequently, it could be because the ink nozzles are drying out.

  • Use the printer regularly: Try printing at least a page or two every week to help maintain the ink flow and avoid excess cleaning.
  • Manual Cleaning: If the print quality starts to degrade, run the cleaning cycle manually, but avoid overusing it unless needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
