I have an hp envy 5660 printer. I just bought replacement #62 cartridges and they are half the width of the ones I’ve used for years. I can’t figure out how to install them.. I actually bought them twice thinking I ordered incorrectly the first time so I have $80 in cartridges I can’t use

Hi @desertgirl1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
It sounds like there's a mix-up with the cartridge type you've purchased for your HP Envy 5660 printer. This printer uses HP 62 ink cartridges, which come in standard and XL sizes, but both should have the same width and fit into the cartridge slots.
Here’s what might be happening and what you can do:
1. Check the Cartridge Packaging:
- Verify Compatibility:
- Double-check the packaging to ensure that the cartridges are indeed labeled as "HP 62" or "HP 62XL." They should be specifically labeled for use with the HP Envy 5660 series.
- Compare the Cartridge Size:
- Compare the size of the new cartridges with the old ones. Even if they’re labeled correctly, they might not be the right ones if they’re significantly different in size.
2. Ensure Correct Installation:
- Open the Printer’s Cartridge Access Door:
- Make sure the printer is turned on and open the cartridge access door. The carriage should move to the center.
- Match the Cartridges to the Correct Slots:
- The HP 62 cartridges should fit into the carriage with a firm push. The black cartridge goes into the right slot, and the tri-color cartridge goes into the left slot.
- Push Until You Hear a Click:
- Insert the cartridges by sliding them in at a slight upward angle and push until they click into place. If they don’t fit, there might be an issue with the cartridges themselves.
3. Possible Packaging or Manufacturing Error:
- Contact the Seller:
- If the cartridges don’t fit even after confirming they are the correct type, it’s possible there was a packaging or manufacturing error. Contact the retailer or seller where you purchased the cartridges. Explain the situation and see if they can offer a replacement.
Return the Incorrect Cartridges:
- Most retailers have return policies, especially if the product was incorrectly packaged or the wrong item was sent. You might be able to return or exchange the cartridges.
4. Check for a Firmware Update:
- Update the Printer’s Firmware:
- If your printer’s firmware is out of date, it might not recognize newer versions of the cartridges. Visit the HP Support website and check if there's a firmware update available for your printer model.
If the cartridges are indeed the correct ones but still don’t fit, contact HP Phone Support directly.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
