Hi @FMeleca,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To empty the ink from the reservoirs in a Smart Tank printer, follow these general steps:
Prepare Supplies: Gather some protective gear like gloves and paper towels, as well as containers for the ink you are removing. Make sure your workspace is also protected from potential spills.
Access the Ink Reservoirs: Open the printer according to your model’s specific instructions. This usually involves lifting the printer's top cover or opening a side panel to access the ink tanks.
Extract the Ink: You can use a syringe or a similar tool to gently draw the ink out of each tank. Insert the needle of the syringe into the ink tank and slowly pull back the plunger to extract the ink. Be very careful to avoid spilling any ink.
Transfer Ink to Containers: Carefully transfer the extracted ink from the syringe into a spill-proof container. Label the containers if you plan on reusing the ink.
Clean Any Spills: Immediately clean up any spills with paper towels. Avoid letting ink sit on surfaces as it can stain.
Reassemble the Printer: Once all ink has been removed and any spills are cleaned, reassemble your printer.
Consider Printer Maintenance: After removing ink, it’s a good time to clean the printer's internal components. Follow your printer's manual for cleaning instructions to ensure no residual ink or debris is left.
Dispose of Ink Properly: Dispose of or store the extracted ink following local regulations for disposing of printer ink.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the help. I will follow your instructions. Once the ink is out, is there a cleaner that I can put into the reservoirs to remove any excess ink? I mistakenly put the wrong color ink into the reservoirs.

Hi @FMeleca,
Thank you for your response. You can use a damp cloth to clean the excess ink.
Cleaning excessive ink from an HP Smart Tank printer typically involves cleaning the ink tank area and the printhead. Here are the general steps you should follow:
Turn off the Printer and Unplug it: Before starting any cleaning, make sure the printer is turned off and unplugged.
Clean the Ink Tank Area:
- Access the Ink Tanks: Open the printer's ink tank lid. You might find spilled or leaked ink around the tanks.
- Use Lint-Free Cloths: With a lint-free cloth or paper towel, gently dab and wipe away the excess ink. Avoid using anything abrasive.
- Be Careful with Sensitive Parts: Make sure not to touch sensitive parts like the ink nozzles or the electronic chip.
Clean the Printhead:
- Automatic Cleaning: Most HP Smart Tank printers have a feature for automatic printhead cleaning. You can initiate this through the printer's control panel or its software on your computer.
- Manual Cleaning: If the automatic cleaning does not resolve the issue, you might need to remove the printhead for manual cleaning. Refer to your printer's manual for specific instructions because this can vary by model. Generally, you use distilled water and a lint-free cloth to gently wipe the printhead.
Clean Any External Spills:
- Clean the Printer Exterior: If there's ink on the outside of the printer, use a damp cloth to wipe it down. Make sure the cloth is not too wet to avoid water damage.
Reassemble and Test the Printer:
- Reassemble Any Removed Parts: Put any parts you removed back in place.
- Plug in and Turn On the Printer: After reassembling, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Run a Test Print: Print a test page to ensure everything is working correctly and that the print quality is satisfactory.
Prevent Future Spills:
- Regular Maintenance: Regularly check and clean your printer to prevent ink from building up.
- Correct Ink Filling: Ensure that when you fill the ink tanks, you do not overfill them. Follow the maximum fill guidelines marked on each tank.
Take care and have a great day ahead!
