My 1.5 year old Smart tank 7602 stopped getting magenta color. How do you clean the printhead without actually taking it out? I'd like to try that before actually taking it out and physically/manually cleaning it ot trying to unclog the supply tube?

Hi @Amos151,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP Smart Tank 7602 All-In-One printer is not printing the magenta color, there are several steps you can take to clean the printhead without physically removing it. Here's a detailed guide on how to proceed:
1. Run the Printer's Self-Cleaning Utility
Access Printer Settings:
- On your computer, go to the Start Menu and open Settings.
- Navigate to Devices and select Printers & scanners.
- Find your HP Smart Tank 7602 from the list and click on it, then select Manage.
Maintenance or Toolbox:
- Open the HP Printer Assistant software (if installed) or use the printer's control panel to find the maintenance section.
- Look for options like Cleaning Printhead, Clean Cartridges, or Printer Toolbox.
Start the Cleaning Process:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to initiate the cleaning process. The printer will perform a series of cleaning cycles to attempt to clear any clogs in the printhead.
2. Perform a Deep Cleaning
Advanced Cleaning:
- If the regular cleaning does not resolve the issue, look for an option to perform a Deep Cleaning or Second-Level cleaning in the same maintenance menu.
Multiple Cycles:
- Sometimes, multiple cleaning cycles may be needed to fully unclog the printhead. Run the cleaning utility a few times if necessary.
3. Print a Diagnostic Page
- Print Quality Report:
- Print a test page or a print quality report to check if the magenta color is improving. This can usually be found in the same maintenance section under options like Print Quality Report or Diagnostic Page.
4. Manual Cleaning with Distilled Water
Prepare Materials:
- Gather some distilled water, a clean lint-free cloth, and a small container.
Soak the Printhead:
- Power off the printer and unplug it.
- Dampen the cloth with distilled water and gently blot the printhead area where the magenta ink comes out. Do not use excessive force.
Run Cleaning Cycle Again:
- After blotting, power the printer back on and run the cleaning cycle again through the printer software.
5. Check Ink Levels
- Ink Supply:
- Ensure that the magenta ink tank has sufficient ink. Low ink levels can sometimes cause printing issues.
6. Update Printer Firmware and Software Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Firmware Update:
- Ensure your printer's firmware and software are up to date. Visit the HP Support website to download and install any available updates for your printer model.
7. Reset the Printer
- Reset Instructions:
- Sometimes, resetting the printer can resolve printing issues. Follow the instructions in your printer's manual for a factory reset, or look for a reset option in the printer’s settings menu.
If after performing these steps the magenta color still does not work, it might be necessary to manually remove and clean the printhead

I hope this helps.

I tried the software "cleaning" method Gaya1239 suggested, unfortunately it did not help. So I tried to physically clean the printhead as she suggested, but each time I open the printer lid, the printhead is way to the right and not in the center where I can access it. From other things I read about this, the printhead is supposed to return to the center when you open the lid, so you have access to the "blue button" on it to release it. Sounds like an easy enough thing to do, only if you can access that button. I can't easily move it by pushing on it, and I'm afraid pushing it hard to move it might damage something. What can I do?
