HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

printer repeatedly displays 'supply system problem'. yellow cartridge is culprit. have repeatedly executed all suggestions from forums and HP support site. Printer will not function. it is a cartridge problem because printer recognizes the depleted cartridge identifying the appropriate issue - 'depleted'. printer recognizes authentic HP cartridge but upon completing reset function displays msg with instructions to 'replace cartridge with non-empty cartridge'. it is my opinion that the problem exists within the cartridge. i am NOT interested in replacing my printer, it has served me well. the problem is within the cartridge manufacturing or else HP is taking Intuit's position that their products have a very limited shelf life regardless of the packaging expiration date.

Hi @busy-1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can truly understand your frustration. When a trusted printer like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 suddenly refuses to cooperate, it feels like hitting a brick wall, especially after you’ve tried every suggestion out there. You’ve invested time and effort, and you deserve a clear path forward without feeling forced into replacing a device that has served you well.

From what you’ve described, the “Supply System Problem” error and the behavior with the yellow cartridge strongly point to an issue with the cartridge itself, either a defective chip or ink delivery failure. Let’s go through the most effective steps to confirm and resolve this:

Recommended Steps

  1. Power Reset the Printer
    • With the printer ON, disconnect the power cord from the rear.
    • Unplug it from the wall outlet for 60 seconds.
    • Reconnect directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors) and turn it back on.

  2. Remove and Inspect the Yellow Cartridge
    • Take out the yellow cartridge.
    • Check for:
      • Protective tape is still on the ink nozzle or vent.
      • Clogged vent (tiny hole on top of cartridge). Use a pin to gently clear if blocked.
      • Ink leakage or damage to electrical contacts.

  3. Clean Electrical Contacts
    • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
    • Gently wipe the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
    • Let them dry for 5 minutes before reinserting.

  4. Update Printer Firmware
  5. Try a Different Genuine HP Cartridge
    • If possible, test with another genuine HP 952 Yellow cartridge.
    • If the error clears, the original cartridge is defective.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
