error message after inserting new ink cartridges, 'there is a problem with the supply system.  try replacing the affected cartridge with a different, non-empty, cartridge.  If message reappears, again, record message and contact HP."  I've turned off, reset printer, and cleaned the metal contact on the ink cartridge, with no effect.

Hi @Idgrappler,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're experiencing a common issue with printer cartridge recognition after installing new ink cartridges. Here are a few additional steps you can try to potentially resolve the error:

Ensure Cartridge Compatibility: Double-check that the cartridges you have installed are compatible with your printer model. Using incorrect or incompatible cartridges can lead to recognition errors.

Check for Plastic Tape: Make sure all the protective tape on the new cartridges has been fully removed. Sometimes, a small piece of tape left on the cartridge can prevent it from being recognized properly.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts and Slot: You mentioned cleaning the metal contacts on the cartridge, but also clean the contacts inside the cartridge slot in the printer. Use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Be gentle and ensure everything is dry before reinserting the cartridges.

Reinstall the Cartridges: Remove the cartridges and reinstall them, making sure each cartridge clicks firmly into place. This ensures they are properly seated and connected.

Reset the Printer: You mentioned resetting the printer, but sometimes a more comprehensive reset is required:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the power source for about 1 minute.
  • Reconnect and turn the printer back on.

Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve cartridge recognition issues. Check the manufacturer's website or your printer's control panel to find any available updates.

Try Different Cartridges: If possible, try using a different set of cartridges. This can help determine if the issue is with the printer or the specific cartridges.

Check for Error Codes or Messages: Sometimes the error message or code can give a clue as to what exactly is wrong. Look up the specific message or code in the printer's manual or on the HP website for more specific troubleshooting related to that error.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
