Hi @Gaynor2800

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with that stubborn E3 error. When a printer refuses to recognise a colour cartridge, it can feel like the whole machine has come to a halt. I appreciate you already trying a different cartridge and restarting the printer — that helps narrow things down.

Let’s walk through a fresh set of steps, slowly and clearly, so we can get the printer to sense that colour cartridge again.

Step 1: Give the cartridge area a clean, fresh start

Sometimes a tiny bit of dust or dried ink can stop the contacts from communicating.

• Turn the printer off and unplug it
• Open the cartridge access door
• Remove the colour cartridge
• Gently wipe the copper‑coloured contacts on the cartridge with a slightly damp, lint‑free cloth
• Wipe the matching contacts inside the printer
• Let everything dry for a moment
• Reinstall the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place
• Close the door and power the printer back on

Step 2: Make sure the cartridge is seated perfectly

Even a slight misalignment can trigger E3.

• Remove the cartridge again
• Check for any protective tape still stuck on the nozzles
• Reinsert the cartridge with a smooth, forward push
• Ensure it sits level and locked in its slot

Step 3: Reset the printer’s internal sensors

This helps the printer refresh its reading of the cartridges.

• Turn the printer on
• Disconnect the power cable from the back while it is still on
• Wait 30 seconds
• Plug the cable back in and turn it on again

You should hear the printer wake up with a fresh calibration.

Step 4: Check for any paper or carriage obstruction

The E3 code can also appear if the carriage movement is restricted.

• With the printer off, open the access door
• Gently slide the carriage left and right
• Make sure nothing is blocking its path
• Close the door and power it back on

Step 5: Try printing a test page

If the cartridge is recognised, the printer should allow you to print a test page from the control panel.

If the colour cartridge still isn’t detected after all these steps, it usually means the printer’s cartridge sensor is struggling to read that slot.

You’ve already done the right things by trying another cartridge and restarting, so you’re very close to the root cause.
