Whenever I print multiple pages on my OfficeJet 7740 there is a solid line down the left side.  This doesn't happen when i print a single page.

Hi @LVKeg,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your OfficeJet 7740 prints a vertical line on the left side only when printing multiple pages. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Clean the scanner glass and ADF strip
– Even if you’re printing, some multi-page jobs route through the ADF preview path.
– Wipe the scanner glass and the narrow left-side ADF strip with a lint-free cloth.

Print an internal test page
– From the printer menu: Setup → Reports → Print Quality Report.
– If the line does not appear, the issue is related to the original document or scan path, not the print engine.

Check for smudges on the ADF rollers
– Open the ADF lid and look for dust, ink, or debris on the rollers.
– Clean them gently with a slightly damp lint-free cloth.

Adjust the paper guides in the tray
– Make sure the guides are snug against the paper stack.
– Loose guides can shift the page during fast multi-page printing and cause vertical marks.

Try printing the same job from a different app or device
– If the line disappears, the original file or software driver may be formatting the job incorrectly.
– Reinstalling the print driver can correct formatting issues.

Clean printheads using the printer’s maintenance tools
– Go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
– A clogged nozzle can cause intermittent vertical lines during continuous printing.

Check for worn or dirty carriage encoder strip
– Open the printer and locate the clear strip behind the carriage.
– If smudged, carefully wipe only the area with an extremely soft, dry cloth.

I hope this helps.
