@claritycoaching, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Try a Different Image File: Just to be sure it’s not the image itself—sometimes photos are edited with darker profiles.

Test Print a Document or HP Diagnostic Page:

On the printer, go to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.

If that prints dark too, it's likely a hardware or ink/printhead issue.

Reset Print System on macOS:

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click or Control-click on the printer list > Reset Printing System.

Re-add the HP ENVY Photo 7855 using “AirPrint” (or the HP driver).

Check Color Profile in Print Dialog:

Open the photo in Preview or your image editor.

Go to File > Print, click Show Details.

Under Color Matching, try toggling between “ColorSync” and “Vendor Matching.”

Under Print Settings or Color Options, check that it's not on grayscale or set to "high contrast/dark".

Printhead Cleaning:

On printer: Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead.

Run this at least twice, checking if colors improve.

Run “Print Quality Diagnostic” Tool:

On the printer: Setup > Tools > Print Quality Report.

Look for any lines, streaks, or missing color blocks.

Check Ink Levels & Cartridge Authenticity:

If you're not using genuine HP cartridges, print quality can degrade.

Even if new, reinsert the cartridges to make sure they’re seated right.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you. I had already seen this information. This morning, somehow it got over its little tantrum and is printing images fine and dandy. No obvious reason! Saved, at least for a while, from having to wade through the confusion of buying a new printer!
