why do I have to enroll in the HP instant ink program to use the cartridge's that came with my new printer. I buy cartridge's as I need them from Costco when needed.

If you purchased an E series printer they are sold at a lower price based on the fact that you have to enroll in instant ink. HP does sell models not restricted to instant ink programs and the box is clearly labelled about this requirement. Unfortunately you have purchased without understand all the implications. The good news is typically you can return items to Costco without hassle so you many want to do that and purchase a non "E" product.

Thanks so much for answering my concerns. I had HP support on the phone 3 times and spent 2 hours only to be frustrated. The support people passed me back and forth between departments and never did figure out why I could not activate these cartridges.  It is labeled as you noted, it was my mistake not noticing that issue. It should be within the phone support system to readily know about this issue instantly when a model and serial number is given as requested every time you get switched over to another support rep. Each time I was asked for my phone number for a call back if disconnected, that must happen often, because I did get disconnected and they did not call me back. HP can't operate a phone system correctly, how can they support their products. I  have 2x 8620 and 2x 8625 printers , 2 at home and 1 each at my 2 adult children homes. We were able to share ink suppliers that way. I owned these for many years. I did have one with a failed print head, that cost over $100 to replace but overall they were dependable. After this round of chaos, I returned the 9018E printer to Costco and bought an Epson Eco Tank printer and it installed and works easily. It prints beautifully. I guess HP has made decisions that will cost them this loyal customer and perhaps many more.  I expect the Epson to prove itself within the next few months, then all of these HP printers can hit the road as they die.
