The cover will not close on my 2604sdw, not the copier cover, the cover with hinge where you put the toner

Hi @George102265,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds incredibly frustrating to deal with a toner cover that just won’t close, especially when you're trying to get things printed quickly. Let's get this sorted out together.

What Might Be Happening

On the HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw, the toner access cover (not the scanner/copier lid) is designed to close securely only when:

  • The toner bottle is fully seated, and the cap is properly tightened.
  • There are no obstructions like packaging material, paper bits, or misaligned components.
  • The hinge mechanism is not blocked or misaligned.

Sometimes, even a small misalignment or leftover packing tape can prevent the cover from closing properly. It’s a bit like trying to close a suitcase that’s just slightly overpacked. It looks like it should shut, but something’s just not sitting right.

Steps to Fix the Issue

  1. Power off the Printer and unplug it for safety.

  2. Open the Toner Access Cover gently and inspect:
    • Is the toner bottle fully inserted and locked in place?
    • Is the cap on the toner bottle tightly closed?
    • Are there any bits of tape, foam, or packaging left behind?

  3. Check the Hinges and Latch
    • Look for any plastic tabs or hinges that might be out of alignment.
    • Gently press the cover down and listen/feel for the click of the latch engaging.

  4. Try Closing Again
    • Press evenly on both sides of the cover.
    • Don’t force it if it resists; double-check for obstructions.

If the cover still won’t close, it could be a mechanical fault with the hinge or latch, and HP may need to inspect or replace the part.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
