Hello! I am trying to print 4x6 photos on a Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M281cdw, and the paper jams every time I try to print. I don't have the same issue with larger A4-size photo paper. The paper is 255g--wondering if it might be too heavy for the printer, or if I'm using the wrong "media type" setting (I am using Card Glossy 176-220, because that is the highest weight option I see listed, though many options don't specify weight). I've tried both trays, with no luck.

Hi @JessicaLK,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw is jamming when printing 4x6 photos, there are a few factors to consider that might be causing the issue. Here’s a detailed guide to troubleshoot and resolve the paper jamming issue:
**1. Verify Paper Specifications
- Check Paper Weight:
- Your paper weight of 255g/m² is indeed heavier than the standard weights for most printers, which often handle up to 220g/m². This could be the reason for the paper jams.
- Paper Size and Type:
- Ensure that the paper size (4x6) and type settings match what you are using. The printer may not handle photo paper as well as standard paper sizes and types.
**2. Adjust Printer Settings
Select the Correct Media Type:
- Go to the printer’s settings or driver settings on your computer.
- Set the media type to "Card Glossy" or the closest option available. If you cannot find an option that specifies weight, choose the highest available setting.
Set the Correct Paper Size:
- Ensure that the paper size is set to 4x6 in the print settings. Some printers need this setting to match the actual size of the paper.
**3. Load Paper Properly
- Ensure that the paper is loaded correctly in the tray. Paper should be aligned with the paper guides.
- For small sizes like 4x6, make sure the guides are snug against the edges of the paper but not too tight.
- Do not overload the paper tray. Loading too much paper can cause jams, especially with heavier weights.
**4. Check Printer Path and Rollers
- Check the paper path for any obstructions or debris that could be causing the jam.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to clean the paper feed rollers. Dust or residue on the rollers can cause feeding issues.
**5. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers
- Visit the HP Support website and check for any firmware updates for your Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw.
- Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware.
- Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed. Download the latest drivers from the HP Support website and install them.
**6. Try Different Paper
- Try printing on standard 4x6 photo paper or regular paper to see if the issue persists. This will help determine if the problem is specific to the heavier photo paper.
- Refer to the printer’s user manual for recommended paper types and weights. Using paper outside of these recommendations can lead to jams and other issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
