Firstly, my native language is not English, so I apologize, I will try to explain the problem as best as possible.

We have had this printer since Feb'21, and it is like new, we use it very little, we have only changed the toner once or twice.

When printing a sheet of paper, it got stuck, when removing the jam on the printer panel the typical cycle of a reset, a restart appeared, and it turned off by itself. The jammed paper came out completely, no torn parts of paper that could have been left inside. Everything pointed to a power issue, but 3 different cables have been tested. In one of these tests, and with the original cable, it turned on again but I did not have time to see what was written on the panel, it turned off again and there is no way to reproduce the error.

Reading other cases in the community of similar errors from other people, they all pointed to opening and cleaning each of the rollers through which the paper passes. I have done this, but the result is the same, the printer does not start.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi @FGP07

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

No need to apologize — I understand you perfectly, and I’ll do my best to guide you through resolving this issue with your HP LaserJet Pro M148fdw printer. It sounds like a frustrating situation, especially when the printer powers off unexpectedly after a paper jam and won’t turn back on.

Let’s go through a series of troubleshooting steps that might help resolve the issue.

1. Check for Residual Paper Jam or Obstructions

Even though you’ve cleared the paper jam, sometimes small bits of paper or debris can get stuck in the printer and prevent it from starting properly.

  • Re-check all paper paths: Double-check the entire paper path for any small bits of paper or debris. Even if the paper came out fully, something small might still be obstructing the sensors or rollers.
  • Open all panels: Open any access doors (such as the rear and front panels) to ensure the entire paper path is clear. Make sure you check inside the fuser area and around the rollers where paper moves through the printer.

2. Power Cycle the Printer

Since the printer is turning off after the jam, a full power cycle may help reset any internal errors.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet.
  2. Wait for at least 1 minute to allow the printer’s internal capacitors to discharge.
  3. After waiting, plug it back in and turn it on again.

If there is an internal error or issue with the power supply, sometimes this simple reset can help the printer recover.

3. Check for Overheating

If the printer is overheating due to a continuous print job or a stuck paper jam causing excessive friction, it might turn off to protect itself. After waiting, check to see if it turns on again after a few minutes.

  • Let the printer cool down for a while, especially if the printer was running hot when the jam occurred.
  • Ensure ventilation: Make sure the printer is in a well-ventilated area and there is no buildup of dust or debris around the fans or vents.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Rachel571

First of all, thank you for your quick response.

I will now answer you point by point:
1 - I checked and have checked again for any paper residue along the entire path, from the input tray to the output. I have paid special attention to the fuser area, removing the toner cartridge and imaging drum. Also the back and the scanner area, which although in principle should not have any influence, I wanted to check absolutely everything ... and everything is clean and as good as new.

2 - Regarding the printer's power cycle, it has been off for days and when connecting the power it does nothing nor when pressing the power button. Just in case, I have tried 3 different power cables and waiting more than 1 minute each time.

3 - There is no overheating. Even so, after spending a few minutes I have checked the area where the cable is connected, which is where I assume the printer's power supply is and it is cold. The printer is in a very well ventilated area, more than 20 centimeters from 2 walls, nothing on the other two sides and nothing on top of it.

I have a question, Is there a key combination to force a reset? Let me explain, maybe at the same time as pressing the power button I can be pressing one or more buttons on the panel and this forces a reset. I don't know, I haven't seen anything in the manual or on the internet, but it's the only thing I can think of, the other option would be to repair it or buy a new one.

Thank you very much Rachel541 for your help.

Hi @Rachel571,

Thank you. That link describes all the places I have already looked at and cleaned and all the steps I have taken. Unfortunately it still does not work, I would like to think that it is the power supply that during the printer reset or check, after the paper jam, has been damaged.

I will have to take it to a technical service.

Thanks again and have a good day.
