Is there any way to fix this without taking apart the whole printer housing?

Hi @rgwhitney,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "print carriage cannot move" error on your HP Officejet Pro 901e typically indicates a mechanical issue with the carriage itself or something obstructing its movement. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue without disassembling the printer housing.

  • Turn off the printer: Power off your printer completely to prevent any damage or injury while troubleshooting.
  • Check for obstructions: Open the printer cover and visually inspect the carriage path for any paper jams, foreign objects, or debris that might be blocking the carriage's movement. Clear any obstructions carefully.
  • Move the carriage: If possible, gently move the carriage manually from side to side to see if it moves freely. Avoid forcing it if it doesn’t move easily.
  • Reset the printer: Sometimes, a simple reset can resolve issues. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and wait for about a minute before reconnecting it. Power on the printer and check if the error persists.
  • Check for damaged parts: Inspect the carriage assembly and the printer's interior for any visibly damaged parts.
  • Update firmware: Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can address bugs or issues causing mechanical errors.

These steps should help you troubleshoot the "print carriage cannot move" error on your HP Officejet Pro 901e printer effectively.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
