My old HP LAZER printer 1320 does not eject paper to top tray. It stops just short of rollers & tray. Yellow LED then blinks, I have to remove
paper manually, reset the printer by opening and closing the toner door. If I print a sheet in the horizontal back output tray it ejects the
printed sheet OK but the yellow LED starts blinking and I have to reset the printer. In both cases, the printer prints the page OK. It almost
looks like, in example 1 above, that the rollers do not continue to roll and this stops the printed paper.

Sounds like the paper path sensor in the fuser unit is broken and does not register the paper.
There's a small sensor in the fuser which senses when the paper passes by. If the sensor does not see the paper , the printer stops. Opening ang closing the door makes the printer ignore the paper path issues for few seconds so the page comes out.
Repairs will be necessary to solve this issue.

Your issues smells like the printer doesn't recognize paper length properly. If you press and hold the green button for a few seconds the printer prints a demo page does the printer acts the same ?

The sensor has a spring that loads it shut. When paper passes it should open. When there's no paper it should be in a closed position

Thanks for the lead. I took the covers off and observed the switch you referenced. It is not a fiscal switch. Is it a magnetic or optical? The leaver arm does not touch the sides... and there are a couple of componets on the small circuit board. I tried tapeing down the large arm in the exit compartment... all that did was cause the yellow LED light to blink and I couldnt generate test page or anything else. Is there a way to bypass the small paper switch? Where would I get a replacement? from a junker?
thanks again

Its a optical switch.
You cant bypass it because it needs to see when there is paper and where the paper starts and ends. Check the small spring on the sensor flag, the sensor must be spring loaded inwards (facing the printers front)

Sorry It took awhile to get back to project. The spring is in place OK. The small arm that the paper touches as it comes out from the fuser is in the up or back position... ready to be touched by the paper. When the paper comes out of the fuser area, the small arm is hit by paper and depressed. After the printed sheet comes out on the horizontal output tray, the printer errors with yellow LED blinking.

Check out the attached document.
Maybe this will help identify other paper patch components
