I see similar postings from more than 2 years ago, but no solutions!  Recently purchased an HP8135e printer and the paper tray is stuck on 8.5x14 paper.  There must be a way to change it for 8.5x11 paper without breaking it.  Every time I want to print something, the "Smart" printer tells me the print order doesn't match the tray setting.  If I tell it to print anyway, it seems to print o.k., but it's annoying that it waits for me to override it before printing.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

Edit / Update -

Add example for Windows - Printing Preferences / Printing Defaults for all jobs

I am sorry you are annoyed -

Life is short.

It's better when mundane irritants do not scratch at our happiness.

In so much that I am aware, the hardware for this product has not changed since the printer was introduced.

Example - HP Part Surfer - 40Q35A

The hardware is only significant in how the physical tray works (and has worked in the past).

View / Adjust Tray and Paper

After changing the paper and / or opening / closing the printer tray, use the touchscreen Printer Control Panel and / or the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Use EWS to adjust the Default Print options.

Next, When configuring the print job, select the appropriate settings.

NOTE

In the case of using the printer with the HP Smart - Mobile - application, it might (still) be necessary to adjust Tray and Paper settings before configuring the print job.

EWS – Tray and Paper Management

Original EWS

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

OR

Example - (Alternate EWS format - select new OfficeJet Pro printers and at least a few LaserJet printers)

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next  (in addition and as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default tray

EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_5EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_5EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_6EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_6

What else?

Windows

=========================

Printing Preferences / Printing Defaults for all jobs

Windows 11 >

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers and scanners

Select Printer > Printer Properties

Windows 10 >

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

Select Printer > Manage > Printer Properties

Next,

Tab Advanced > Printing Defaults > Select Shortcut > OK

"Getting there"

Set the Driver to your installed HP driver

Set the Printing Defaults for jobs.

I'm getting the impression that the paper tray does not need to be physically adjusted between 8.5x11 and 8.5x14 paper. Using the printer screen to set up the paper size is sufficient.  Is that correct?   Confusing because the tray appears to be adjustable, but I can't seem to change it.

Still not sure why setting up the paper size on the printer screen and then setting up to print a computer file to the same size paper, causes the printer to say the print order doesn't match the paper in the tray.  It doesn't print until I press "print" on the printer screen.

OK - Sounds like there is still no solution for you.

I've seen a paper mis-match when the printer and the print job setup do not match.

That said, What works for me does not mean your situation will be identical.

I run two trays --

Tray 1 for envelopes and Tray 2 for regular paper.

and

EWS is set to "prefer" Tray 2 in Default Print options.

Depending on the job, I set the Source in that job for the Tray I want to use -- insurance for the default settings on the printer.

Examples - Tray and Paper / Default Print Options

EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_5EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_5EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_6EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_6

Job Setup

Perhaps -- if not done -- try selecting the source (Tray) as opposed to leaving it as "Automatic" in the job configuration setup.

I've not see the issue as I think I understand it -- At this point, I cannot add anything useful.

If you wish, open a New Post -- Perhaps you will receive a workable solution.
