Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My 3 year old OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One printer won't load standard photo paper to print a photo.  It sounds like it attempts to load the paper but it fails to do so and then reports a "Paper Jam."  But the photo paper isn't "stuck", it remains in the tray.

I've tried different photo paper stock without success.  And after I remove the photo paper it prints the photo on plain paper.

I am only loading 1 piece of photo paper on top of the plain paper in the tray.

It's possible you just need to load the paper the way the printer expects it to be done.

 User Guide

Load photo paper

Pages 22-23

Note Step #2 that advises you to remove "other" paper from the tray when loading your photo paper.

Why?

Many printers can "sense" photo paper.  That said, photo paper is not the same Media as regular paper; photo paper is generally thicker and might have a shiny surface.  Loading a single sheet of photo paper on top of regular paper and / or loading photo paper without changing the paper (Media) settings might confuse the printer and / or result in spurious errors.

Can't stand it?  Hate moving paper around?

At the least - load several sheets of photo paper on top of the other paper AND change the Media settings.  That might work and saves the extra steps of removing the other paper.  Try it - doesn't work?  Remove the "regular paper" and load at least five sheets of photo paper in the tray...

Next, tell the printer what you are doing with the paper.

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Display Panel

Open Printer Tray,

If you have not yet done so, add desired paper type

Wait a couple of seconds…

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

Look for a message on the Printer Control / Display Panel,

Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down menu, Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)

And / Or

Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)

Click Apply to save changes

NOTE:  EWS is also available in HP Smart

Set the Preferences - Windows

  1. Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

  1. Select and adjust settings in each category for the Media (kind of paper), source (tray), and paper size.

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage > Printing Preferences

Next

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight your preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

NOTE - Make changes to a Shortcut

  • Select a shortcut and adjust the settings for paper, source (tray), other settings / Tabs
  • If there is a More > section, check / adjust settings in the sub-sections > Click OK to save sub-menu changes
  • If supported, save the edited shortcut or use “Save As” or “Create Custom Shortcut” to save as a new / different file name
  • Click OK to save the setup

You are welcome.

You are not the first one to do this.

I've done this.  Smiling.

The 8720/8740 is robust and tolerant of our habits.

Just remember to change the paper type.

Stay Safe.
