Hi @ClaudeBu ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer is not detecting paper in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), here are steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check for Paper Jams in the ADF
- Open the ADF cover and inspect for any paper pieces, debris, or foreign objects that might be stuck inside the feeder.
- Remove any paper that may have been improperly loaded.
- Clean the rollers to ensure smooth paper feeding.
2. Check the Paper Type and Size
- Ensure that the paper in the ADF is of the correct size and type that is supported by the printer (e.g., standard sizes like A4 or Letter).
- Make sure the paper is loaded properly and not too thick or curled, as this might prevent detection.
3. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds and then plug the printer back in.
- Turn it on again and try using the ADF.
4. Clean the ADF Sensors
- Dust or dirt on the ADF sensors can prevent the printer from detecting paper.
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water to clean the ADF sensor window and rollers.
- Ensure that the sensors are free of any dust or debris that might interfere with paper detection.
5. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date, as this can fix bugs that may be causing the ADF issue.
- You can update the firmware using the HP Smart app or directly from the printer’s settings.
6. Run a Printer Diagnostic
- Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to troubleshoot and detect any hardware-related issues with the ADF. HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download it from the HP Support website and follow the instructions to diagnose the problem.
7. Check ADF Settings in Printer Preferences
- On your computer, navigate to Devices and Printers, right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, and select Printer Properties.
- Check the Paper Source settings to ensure the ADF is selected when scanning or copying.
8. Test with a Different Document
- Try using different types of paper or another document to see if the issue persists.
- If the problem is with specific paper or documents, it could be an issue with the paper rather than the ADF itself.

I hope this helps.
