Hi all,

My printer warranty expired December 2022. Im getting a Paper Jam error, saying it is in the rear. I have checked every area that the online support said to check, and I do not see any paper anywhere. I have also cleaned the paper rollers as instructed, they are clean. I did the power reset as instructed... Still, I get the same error "Jam in paper path, open rear door and clear. Jam" with the orange warning light flashing. I do not see any paper anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Frank

@fschalk1, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding a paper jam issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.  You can follow this step:

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  • If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.
  • Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately none of these steps fixed the jam error. My printer is too far out of warranty (I’ve only had the printer for 3.5 years) and support told me it’s no longer serviceable. So a printer I’ve had for a little bit of time, worked flawlessly, but is now rendered a giant paperweight because of this. Not very cool.

thanks

@fschalk1, Thanks for getting back to us! I understand how frustrating this must be. Since you've already tried the recommended steps without success, let's dig a little deeper to see if we can identify the issue.

  • Do you still see the same exact error message, or has it changed at any point?
  • When you open the rear door, do the rollers move freely, or do they seem stuck?
  • Did you check if there are any small bits of torn paper stuck in the rollers or paper path? Sometimes they can be hard to spot.
  • Have you tried using a different type or brand of paper, just in case the printer is having trouble picking up sheets?
  • If you print a test page or try to feed a single sheet manually, does the printer attempt to pull it in, or does it show the jam error immediately?

I also noticed that you mentioned contacting support. If you have the case ID, please share it with me via private message, and I can review what was discussed and see if anything was missed. We value your privacy and will ensure your information is handled securely.

Let me know the results of these checks, and we’ll try to figure out the next best step!

Looking forward to your response.

@fschalk, I really appreciate your patience and all the steps you've already taken to resolve this issue. I completely understand how frustrating it must be to have a reliable printer suddenly stop working. Let’s go over a few more troubleshooting steps to see if we can get this sorted out.

Try these:

Check for Hidden Paper or Debris

  • Even the smallest piece of torn paper or dust buildup can trigger a false jam error.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect deep inside the paper path, particularly near the rollers and behind any accessible panels.
  • If available, try using compressed air to clear any unseen debris.

Manually Rotate the Rollers

  • Since the rollers move freely, try manually rotating them a bit more to ensure they are properly aligned.
  • Sometimes, misaligned rollers can trick the printer into thinking there’s a jam.

Sensor Check

  • Some printers have small paper sensors that can get stuck.
  • Gently move the sensor (usually a small black lever near the rollers) to see if it’s functioning correctly.

Try a Different Power Source

  • Unplug the printer and connect it to a different wall outlet (avoid using surge protectors).
  • A weak power supply can sometimes cause persistent errors.

Firmware Update

  • If possible, check for a firmware update on HP support website.
  • An outdated firmware version might be misinterpreting a hardware status.

Since the issue persists despite all these steps, we’ll need to review your case details further. Unfortunately, searching by name isn’t an option, but if you have a case ID from your previous support interaction, I can look into what was discussed and whether there are any additional recommendations we might have missed.

Let me know what you find after trying these steps! I'm happy to help in any way I can.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
