3301sdw advanced settings will not accept PIN

Trying to set up new printer via lan connection.  my computer "finds my device" and identifies the printer.  I am then prompted to enter the PIN.  I have tried several times insuring that that each digit is correct, but i get an "invalid PIN" message.

What's up?  Frustration level is at about a 8.5.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @WrongButton,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the frustration! The issue with the PIN not being accepted for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw printer during the setup process can sometimes stem from a few common causes. Here's what you can try to resolve the problem.

Double-Check PIN Entry

  • Ensure that you are entering the correct PIN. The PIN should be displayed on the printer’s screen during setup, and it’s case-sensitive and numeric. Be sure to enter it exactly as shown, with no extra spaces or incorrect digits.

Restart the Printer and Your Computer

  • Power off both the printer and your computer. Restart both devices and attempt the setup again, making sure you are entering the PIN as prompted.

Clear Previous Network Settings

  • If the printer was previously connected to a network, it may still have old network settings causing issues with the PIN. To clear these:
    • On the printer, press the Home button.
    • Navigate to Setup or Network Setup and reset network settings.
    • This will clear previous network configurations and allow for a fresh setup.

Check Printer Firmware

  • Sometimes, a firmware update can resolve connection issues. Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Check the HP website or use the HP Smart app to confirm the firmware version.

Use HP Smart App for Setup

  • If you are using the standard method through a browser, try setting up the printer using the HP Smart app instead. The app often simplifies the setup process, including entering PINs.

Ensure Proper LAN Connection

  • Verify that the printer is properly connected to your LAN (wired or wireless). Sometimes, a faulty connection can lead to communication issues and PIN errors.

Manual Setup Option

  • If the automatic process fails, you can set up the printer manually:
    • Use the HP Smart app or web-based configuration (by entering the printer’s IP address into a browser) to complete the setup without needing the PIN.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, consider resetting the printer completely and starting over with the setup process.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
