Hi, my recent windows update seems to have altered my HP Officejet 3830 preferences.  When i click preferences i no longer have a back/white color choice, it's gone.    I have the latest driver form HP my device properties says that the multiplexer is not installed.  i read on here that that is the reason i have no color preference.  How do i install or get the multiplexer or is that part of a driver.  I do not have the same problem with my other laptop it shows printer color options.

But is has a different driver.  Has anyone experienced this and how do you fix it.  I have the latest drivers form HP and have used the HP print and scan doctor and the support assistant.  they have come up with nothing.

Well. i fixed it.  Uninstalled the online basic software program for the printer and HP Smart as that was the same no color option.

Reinstalled printer software form original disc and low and behold I have my color preference field back as an option.  I will avoid online updating for the printer as there is obviously an issue with the download.

Prerequisites - Things to Know

The guide does not seem to show a separate "duplexer" for this printer.

This is nothing exceptional - in many models the duplex hardware is built inside the printer.

Another place the "duplex" operation is found is in Printer Properties

Duplex feature installed? (Model Dependent)

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click Printer > Printer Properties > tab Device Settings

Beneath Installable Options > Automatic Duplexing Unit > Select / Verify Installed > OK

So what?

It's not working...

There is a Doctor version for this kind of problem - it is an older (specialty) version of the Doctor that is fairly good at sorting loss of color printer and loss of duplex printing (sometimes, yes, these two features can "break" at the same time).

HP printer is offline or not responding

Resource – Choose the right doctor for the job

Regular Doctor...

Open Website

HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Click the green Download Now option / box

Wait!

If the problem / issue is one of

  • Printer is Offline
  • Cannot print in Color
  • Duplex printing has disappeared

Try this “Offline” Doctor version:

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

NOTES – The “Offline” doctor

As a result of repairing issues,

Offline / Color check / Duplex check version of the Doctor may replace the printer or add a “(Copy 1)” version of the driver in Devices and Printers.

If there are two printers in Devices and Printers,

If one of them does not work,

Try sending your job to the “Copy 1” named printer.

If you want / need to rename the “Copy 1” printer:

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer name > Printer Properties > Tab General >

In the top box, Edit the name of the printer (For example, remove the part that says “Copy 1”)

Click Apply / OK to save change

NOTE:  The name change may take a bit of time (a few minutes), else Restart the computer and log in.

Sure - that works sometimes.

Excellent outcome.

If plain reinstall doesn't work, run the old Doctor - one of the several steps in the program reloads the printer software.

Happy Printing.
