I understand your Android 8.1 phone can’t install HP Smart and you want to know if there’s a version that will still work. Let’s go through a few steps to check what options you have.

Check HP Smart compatibility
HP Smart now requires Android 10 or newer.
This means Android 8.1 won’t install the latest version from the Play Store.

Try installing an older HP Smart version
Older versions of the app supported Android 8.x.
These can be installed manually by downloading an APK from a trusted source.

Enable installation from unknown apps (if using an older version)
Go to Settings > Apps > Special access > Install unknown apps and enable it for your browser.
This allows your phone to install the older APK.

Use the HP Print Service Plugin as an alternative
This plugin still supports older Android versions and allows basic printing.
It’s available directly from the Google Play Store.

Use Mopria Print Service if needed
Mopria works with most Wi-Fi printers and supports older operating systems.
It can help with basic printing even if HP Smart cannot be installed.

Check if your printer supports Embedded Web Server setup
You can finish Wi-Fi setup through the printer’s IP address in a browser.
This avoids needing the HP Smart app for initial setup.

I hope this helps.
