Hi @terrycwise
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. It sounds like you're having an issue with your HP 4200e printer where print jobs stay in the queue and the printer doesn't actually print, even though the status says it is printing. Since you're directly connected via USB, here are a few steps to troubleshoot and fix this problem:
Step 1: Check the Printer and USB Connection
- Verify that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the laptop.
- If possible, try using a different USB port on your laptop or a different USB cable to rule out any hardware issues.
- Make sure the printer is powered on and there are no error messages or warnings on the printer's display.
- Check if there are any blinking lights or errors on the printer. If there are, clear them by following the on-screen instructions on the printer.
Step 2: Clear the Print Queue
- Go to Start > Devices and Printers or Printers & Scanners in your Settings.
- Right-click on your HP 4200e printer and select See what's printing to open the print queue.
- In the print queue window, select any print jobs that are stuck and click Cancel. This will clear the queue.
- If the print jobs are still stuck, try restarting your computer or printer and then canceling the jobs again.
Step 3: Restart the Print Spooler Service
The print spooler service is responsible for managing print jobs, and if it's stuck, it can cause print jobs to stay in the queue.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- In the list of services, scroll down and find Print Spooler.Right-click on Print Spooler and select Restart.
- After restarting the service, try printing again and see if the print job goes through.
Step 4: Reinstall or Update the Printer Drivers
If the drivers are outdated or corrupted, this can cause printing issues.
Uninstall Existing Drivers:
- Open Devices and Printers or Printers & Scanners in Settings.Right-click on your HP 4200e printer and select Remove device.
Download the Latest Drivers:
- Go to the HP Support website and search for HP 4200e printer drivers.Download the latest drivers for your operating system (make sure it's the right one for your version of Windows).
Install the Drivers:
- Run the installer you downloaded and follow the instructions to install the latest drivers.Once done, reconnect the printer via USB and check if the issue is resolved.
Step 5: Set Printer as Default Printer
Sometimes, print jobs may not be sent to the correct printer.
Set the Printer as Default:
- Open Devices and Printers or Printers & Scanners in Settings.Right-click on your HP 4200e printer and select Set as default printer.
- Try printing a test page or document to ensure that the printer is properly recognized and prints.
Step 6: Check for Windows Updates
There may be important Windows updates that can fix printer issues, especially with drivers or system settings.
- Check for Windows Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.Click Check for updates and install any pending updates. I will be glad to help you.
I hope this helps.
