I have a 7120 HP Envy Photo that I have never been able to connect my computer or WiFi.  I just tried again after several years and I get the “cartridge problem”

”Remove and install the indicated cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed.”

I can’t get any further and only want to use its scanner capability (if it exists).

It sounds like you're encountering a cartridge error that's preventing you from accessing your HP Envy Photo 7120. Unfortunately, many HP printers require functional cartridges to enable scanning, even if you only want to use the scanner.

 

Here’s what you can try:

 

 Resolve the Cartridge Error:

  • Remove the indicated cartridge and inspect it for any protective tape, dirt, or damage.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly and ensure it clicks into place.
  • If the error persists, try replacing the cartridge with a new one.

Check Scanner Functionality:

  • If the cartridge error is resolved, you can use the scanner through the HP Smart app or your computer’s scanning software.
  • Place the document on the scanner glass, open the HP Smart app, and select the Scan option.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scan.

Bypass the Cartridge Error (if possible):

  • Some HP printers allow limited functionality even with a cartridge error. Try accessing the scanner directly by pressing the Scan button on the printer’s control panel or using the HP Smart app.
