OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

1. This printer has been networked for a few years - worked fine with various PCs & laptops from XP to Win10. It has always been on a static IP 192.168.1.100.

2. Took a new Z240 workstation out of the box a few days ago and set it up using win7 Pro x64.  Windows 7 found the network printer and ran the printer after installing the basic printer drivers downloaded from HP.

3. Scanner is not found by Windows. Of course I can go to 1.100 and the web server on the printer comes up and I can do a scan that way, but that's not the point.

4. I downloaded the full install package for the 8600 Plus from HP. When attempting to install, the HP software cannot find the net printer. Manually gave it the IP and the host name. Still cannot find printer.

5. Of course turned off workstation firewalls, reran install, failed for same reasons. Uninstalled drivers, reran installation, failed for same reasons. Shut everything down, reset the router, turned everything back on, reran the install, failed for the same reasons.

6. I don't understand why Win7 can see the printer but the HP install software can't find it.

7. I don't know why windows doesn't find scanner features on the 8600. Can only print and not call for a scan. (drivers?)

8. An old XP machine can find the network 8600 scanner source (Twain) and make use of it.

9. What can be missing on this 'new' Z240 workstation with win7 x64?

10. Print/Scan doctor doesn't do any better. It says it can see a network printer but then it sends you to the normal HP install software routine to find the net printer, which fails, can't find any printer.

11. Should I look for older/earlier version of the installation software (eg win7x32 or even XP)???

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Can you try te standalone scan software:

HP Scan Extended

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Hope that helps!.

I am not clear why the scanner msi enabled all 8600 features to become visible to the HP printer device setup software, nevertheless, the printer/scanner is alive and well on the Z240 now. Outstanding! Can you briefly explain what extended settings enabled discovery of the network printer, or conversely, why HP 8600 devicesetup could not see the printer?

Hi @AC8UR,

Glad to hear that your issue is resolved and all is working well now.

HP Scan Extended is an updated version of the Scan User Interface.  There could be a variety of reasons - better searchability to discover network.  Windows itself could also play a part - with all the updates, some of which "wreck" the printer drivers - resulting in a need for reinstall.

Have a nice day!
