I need your help. I have been trying to downgrade my Officejet Pro 8610 from firmware FDP1CN2022AR to the old one.
However, whenever I try to do this I am unable to select the printer in order to downgrade the firmware. I'm guessing this is probably due to the fact that the current firmware available cannot downgrade the printer.
Is there a way around this or do I have to use a different tool?
I have seen that others have been able to successfully downgrade their printers with help from HP Support Agents.
I would be grateful for the same assistance
I alternate between HP and Generic inks - otherwise I will need to landfill this otherwise good printer.
Thanks

Hi @Printing_away,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are looking for help with downgrading the firmware for your Printer.
Unfortunately, you wont be able to downgrade the printer firmware once updated.
However, you can perform the below shared steps at your own discreation as it is not recommended.
Check Compatibility: Ensure that the older firmware version is compatible with your Officejet Pro 8610 model. Download the firmware file from a reliable source, preferably from HP’s official website or a trusted service provider.
Download Firmware: Go to the HP Support website, search for the Officejet Pro 8610, and download the desired older firmware version. Make sure it is specifically for your printer model.
Prepare Your Printer:
- Backup: Make a note of your printer settings, as downgrading firmware may reset them to factory defaults.
- Connect: Ensure that your printer is connected to your computer via USB (for direct connections) or is properly connected to your network.
Install HP Printer Software: Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Printer Software installed on your computer. You can download it from the HP website.
Use HP Firmware Update Tool:
- HP provides a firmware update tool that can also be used for downgrading in some cases. Open the HP Printer Software on your computer.
- Navigate to the "Printer Maintenance" or "Tools" section and look for an option related to firmware updates or recovery.
- If downgrading is supported, you should see an option to select the older firmware file. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Manual Downgrade:
- If the HP Printer Software does not offer a downgrade option, you may need to use a manual method. This usually involves accessing the printer’s web interface through a browser by typing in the printer’s IP address.
- Navigate to the firmware update section and follow the instructions to upload and install the older firmware file.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

If you search the web, there are some other resources, it is a little tricky, you also need the old firmware. If your printer got upgraded to the new FW - the easy upgrade method will block the firmware revert so it was a hassle.
MY 8610 was the BEST printer I have ever had ... by far, no question.. no doubt. I alternated HP and generic carts. The last set on generics got bricked... then I changed the FW back, which bricked the new HP cartridge. So I would need to buy all new cartridges (HP or generic) to test if it was working as I kept getting the "printer or ink error" error. After about 6 hours I just gave up.
The fact that HP modded my printer - after I bought it... which changed the performance... to me thats unacceptable. There are actons against HP in US and EU for this practice. However 8610 was not the most common and so not included. Just charge what you need to for reasonable margin on old printer inks and move on.
Instead we have this mess, more plastic in landfill.
Sorry HP - 30 yr customer
