I upgraded the firmware, when I start the printer I get the message "Checking the printer. Please wait..." Then a message appears "Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP instant ink". I click "Hide". Next message "Align the Printhead". I click "continue" and a message "Printing the alignment page..." appears. Then nothing. Keeping the power button pressed does restart the printer, and the same sequence repeats.
The printer is not connected to WiFi. The cartridges are original HP from Instant Ink. I've checked for stuck paper, but there is none. I've removed/inserted the cartridges.
All help would be appreciated.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,
You are receiving this message “Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink” on your printer because you will need to either enrol in Instant Ink or buy regular HP cartridges to resume printing.
If you see this message when you ARE enrolled, then there may be a problem with the cartridge or with the printer enrollment.
Go to Instantink.com and click the link to Sign In, which is located at the top right of the page, or under the 3 horizontal lines if you are on a mobile device.
If you are able to log in, then you do have an account.
Click the Printer Details link under the printer name to check the serial number of the enrolled printer and make sure it matches the printer you are using. Refer this article to know more information about instant ink enrollment. Click Here
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you Echo Lake. I did enroll (I was sure I was since I have received replacement cartridges), but I cannot complete the steps on the printer. Your website asks "You must enable HP Web Services on your printer to receive HP Instant Ink replacement cartridges." but the printer does not get through the step "Printing the alignment page...".
What to do?

Thank you for posting back.
As you mentioned in the post " printer is not connected to the network, For instant ink account to work you need to connect the printer to the network and enable web services.
Refer to the article: Turn On Web Services By the end of the article you will be able to fix the issue.
