So to begin I would like to state that I have removed and reinstalled the printer from my device list multiple times, I have factory reset the printer's settings, and I have turned it on and off again over and over.
The 9730e printer has two trays. I keep 8.5x11 paper in tray 1 and 11x17 paper in tray 2. When I take the trays out and put them back in, the printer asks if I changed the paper type and then shows a list of sizes. I’ve checked that both trays have the right sizes set, and we can confirm that the printer recognizes both trays since it prompts me when I remove or install either of them.
However, when I try to print a PDF in 11x17 from Chrome, the printer thinks tray 1 is the only one available and gives a paper size mismatch error. It asks if I want to print anyway, and when I choose "print," it does use the 11x17 paper from tray 2 that it seemingly couldn't detect. Therefore I can technically print using tray 2, but I have to go through that mismatch menu between each page.
I get the same issue when the paper is inversed as well: If 11x17 is in tray 1 and 8.5x11 is in tray 2, it prints 11x17 paper with no problem, but prompts the mismatch menu if I try to print 8.5x11 from tray 2. It seems like there's a problem with the printer properly recognizing tray 2, since it knows that there is a tray 2 with a certain paper size, it just doesn't automatically choose to print from it. I’d like to find a way for it to correctly select tray 2 automatically without having to use this weird menu glitch between every page. Thanks!

I upgraded my computer's RAM (memory) shortly after this post before I had a chance to try any of these fixes, and when I tried to use the printer again, everything unexpectedly worked perfectly normally. I didn't use any of the presented solutions in order to fix it, so I can't confirm that any of them work. I guess there was an issue with my computer's capacity to process information that was causing some kind of miscommunication. I'm not entirely sure. But I recommend to anyone else having this issue to upgrade your computer's memory if your current specs match what I had at the time of the issue. I went from Patriot Viper 2x8 (16GB) RAM at 2666MHz, to Corsair Vengeance 2x16 (32GB) RAM at 3200MHz. Literally all of the issues with the printer disappeared.

Hi @izzy9190,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue regarding the paper type mismatch with your HP 9730e printer. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem of the printer not automatically recognizing the correct tray:
1. Check Paper Settings in the Printer Menu
- Go to the printer’s control panel.
- Navigate to Setup > Paper Setup and ensure that both trays are configured correctly for the paper sizes you have loaded.
- Confirm that both trays are set to the correct paper type (plain, photo, etc.) as well.
2. Adjust Print Settings in the Application
- When printing from Chrome or any other application, go to the print settings before sending the job.
- Ensure you select the correct paper size (11x17 or 8.5x11) and choose the correct tray (Tray 2 for 11x17, Tray 1 for 8.5x11).
- Look for an option that specifies to "use the selected tray" or "automatic tray selection."
3. Update Printer Firmware
- Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, issues like these are resolved with updates.
- You can find firmware updates on the HP support website.
4. Use HP Smart App for Printing
- Try printing through the HP Smart app instead of directly from Chrome. The app might handle the tray selection more effectively.
- Make sure the app is updated to the latest version.
5. Create a Print Profile
- If your printer allows it, create print profiles in the printer settings for different paper sizes. This might help the printer recognize which tray to use for specific tasks.
6. Check Printer Preferences on Your Computer
- On your computer, go to Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your printer and select Printer Preferences.
- Ensure that the default paper source is set to “Auto” or specifically to the tray you wish to use for each size.
7. Reset Printer to Factory Settings Again
- If none of the above work, consider performing another factory reset of the printer. Sometimes, issues can be resolved by starting fresh.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
