The HP OfficeJet Pro 8023 error code 71.02.4A typically indicates a hardware failure related to the printhead or internal components of the printer. This error is often linked to a printhead failure or a problem with the carriage assembly (where the printhead moves).

Here’s a step-by-step guide to try and fix the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

Start with a basic restart to reset the printer:

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source and wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and turn the printer on.
  4. Check if the error still appears after the printer reboots.

Sometimes, power cycling can reset internal errors and may resolve minor glitches.

2. Check for Obstructions or Jammed Paper

The error could be triggered by a mechanical problem such as a paper jam or something obstructing the carriage path:

  1. Open the printer’s top cover to access the printhead area.
  2. Manually move the printhead to see if it moves smoothly across its track. If it’s stuck or obstructed, clear any paper scraps, ink residue, or foreign objects.
  3. Look for any visible paper jams or debris in the paper path, including inside the printer’s rear access panel if it has one.
  4. Close the cover and try to print again.

3. Check the Printhead

A faulty printhead could be causing the 71.02.4A error, so it’s worth checking the condition of the printhead:

  1. Open the printer's cover to access the printhead and ink cartridges.
  2. Remove the ink cartridges carefully.
  3. Lift the printhead to remove it from the carriage (consult the printer’s manual for exact steps on how to remove the printhead if needed).
  4. Inspect the printhead for any obvious signs of damage, ink clogs, or residue that could be blocking the nozzle or electrical contacts.
  5. Clean the printhead carefully using a soft cloth or paper towel dampened with water (if it's removable).
  6. Reinstall the printhead and ink cartridges, ensuring everything is properly seated.

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

If the hardware seems fine and there are no obstructions, a factory reset might help clear any internal errors that cannot be resolved by power cycling:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance.
  2. Look for the Restore Defaults or Reset option.
  3. Confirm and follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.

5. Update Printer Firmware

Sometimes, firmware issues can cause internal errors. If you’re able to connect to the printer, you can check for a firmware update:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Firmware (or similar options depending on the model).
  2. If there’s a newer version available, follow the prompts to update the firmware.
