Just got the printer set up today. I can't print anything in color. MacBook running Monterey.
HP "print quality diagnostic page" prints in color but nothing comes out in color from my programs.
(I made a cyan, magenta and yellow square and they come out in shades of grey.) Cannot find the setting to turn on color printing why isn't it defaulting to color??

Hi @ANNE178,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're experiencing issues with your HP Smart Tank 6001 printer where everything you try to print is coming out in grayscale instead of color, there could be a few potential reasons for this problem. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow.
Check Ink Levels: Ensure that your color ink cartridges are not empty or nearly empty. If the color cartridges are low on ink, the printer might default to grayscale printing.
Printer Settings on Computer:
- On your MacBook, open the document you want to print.
- Go to the "File" menu and select "Print."
- In the print dialog box, make sure that the "Color" or "Black & White" settings are correctly configured.
- Look for an option like "Color Options" or "Quality & Media" and check the settings there. Make sure the color settings are selected.
Printer Settings on Printer Control Panel:
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to the printer settings.
- Check for any settings related to color vs. grayscale printing. Make sure color printing is selected.
Printer Software:
- Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers and software installed on your MacBook. Outdated or incompatible drivers can sometimes cause printing issues.
- You can download the latest drivers and software from the official HP website.
Print Preview:
- Before sending the print job, use the print preview option to see how the document will appear when printed. This can help you identify if the issue is with the document itself or the printing settings.
Printer Maintenance:
- Run any maintenance functions available in the printer's control panel or through the printer software. This might include cleaning printheads or aligning cartridges.
Restart Printer and MacBook:
- Sometimes, simply restarting both the printer and your MacBook can resolve communication and configuration issues.
Color Management Settings:
- In some cases, color management settings on your MacBook might be affecting how colors are being printed. Check your system color settings and ensure they're set to standard color profiles.
Printer Firmware:
- Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Updated firmware can sometimes address known issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
