HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One Printer

I know I solved this problem 3 years ago for a laptop, but I have a desktop with Win11 that I just had to reinstall the OS and I can't recall how to make this work.

I have an HP OfficeJet 5610. It is connected to my old XP computer and shared.

How do I configure WIn11 to print to it? It is shared on the computer Slickswintel as HPOJ5600

  • I tried going to \\slickswintel right-clicking on the shared printer and choosing "Connect." The dialog box "connecting to HPOJ5600 on slickswintel" just going on forever and never connects.
  • I tried going to settings->Bluetooth & Devices ->Printers and scanners ->Add a device. No use.
  • I tried clicking on "add manually". I used the following:
    1. Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings
    2. Create a new port
    3. Type of port: Local port
    4. Port name: \\slickswintel\HPOJ5600
    5. Selected HP and HPOfficejet 5600 series
    6. Selected "do not share this printer"
    7. Clicked OK. Tried to do a test page The result is that nothing gets sent to the XP machine, but the items get queued up locally.

What did I do wrong and how do I set up the printer? I could have sworn the last step was the correct one, but obviously it's not correct.

Yes, I tried both restart and resume queue. I also tried rebooting both machines.

I also looked, and there was no driver to download on HP's website, it said to use the drivers built-in to Windows, although I do recall needing to install a driver on XP, Vista, and 7 (this is an old printer).

I am obviously doing something wrong with the setup. I have a laptop that I somehow managed to get to print to the printer 2 years ago. I noticed that the ports look different on the laptop than on the desktop, but I don't know how to fix it or what procedure I used to get it working.

On the laptop with Win11, the port properties look like they are printing to a USB port. It is also followed by a seemingly unused DOT4_001 port. My old Vista/Windows 7 computer looks identical, and it looks the same under Vista (it's a dual-boot computer I got in early 2009, I don't use Vista much these days).

On the Win11 desktop it looks a little different which suggests there is something wrong with my install/setup procedure.

Any idea what I'm dong wrong to set this up? What procedure I should use to connect to and use the printer shared by Windows XP?

I have SMB1 and SMB direct turned on in "Turn Windows Features on or off". I can access the XP files just fine. The printer shows up, but I can't open it either.

I also tried starting over after turning Windows Firewall off and rebooting just in case that was the problem. NO effect.
